Our Erasmus seminars, which we took a break for almost two years, have started again. This time, we have hosted Assoc.Dr. Ave Mets from the University of Tartu. She has made a presentation on "Constructive Realism and a Pluralistic Science" on 25 October 2021, in C Block Omer Halis Demir Class of the South Campus.
Before starting her speech, Dr. Ave Mets stated that she would base what she was going to talk by taking as a model the discipline of chemistry and also asked if there was anyone in the hall who was particularly interested in chemistry or the history of chemistry. Also by asking us if we know the Estonian chemist and philosopher of science Rein Vihalemm, she expressed us the philosophical influence that constitutes the main axis of her speech.
In this context, her lecture consists of three main parts: First one ise Rein Vihalemm’s distinction of types of sciences on the basis of their methodology (exact sciences, natural sciences, and social and human sciences), inspired by chemistry as Vihalemm’s first specialisation. Second one is Ronald Giere’s model-based account of scientific theory and perspectivism, based on primarily technically aided scientific interaction with the world. Third one is one case study of chemistry: How do the model-based account, and methodological and perspectival pluralism fare with chemistry as a productive science pluralistic in several respects (methodologically, ontologically, ontically, ontogenetically).
After her speech, Dr. Ave Mets answered a few questions from the audience. At the end of the event, the certificate of appreciation and participation was presented to her. Our event attracted great interest from undergraduate and graduate students and members of our department.
