The History of Science Department considers 'science' to be an organized system of knowledge developed by humanity to better understand the universe/nature. We aim to research, in various civilizations and cultures, the history of this understanding and in addition to the system itself, the system’s relation to the historical context in which it is produced, to other human activities such as religion, philosophy and art. While using contemporary research techniques, we take into consideration the individual and social counterparts of these relations. Our department offers undergraduate and graduate programmes. In addition, students are given the necessary background support in learning classical languages and the technical content of the discipline in basic and formal sciences in which they are expected to research. The targets of the department are to contribute to the preservation of heritage of science and technology in Turkey and to prepare students for the teacher candidate in order to instruct the lessons of history of science in secondary education.
